BY CHRIS · WEEKLY SENIOR SEAT SCAN

Tuesday evening rather than Monday morning, and it is late here in Dubai as I send it. IBC took the weekend and most of Monday with it. The boards were still read on Monday morning, so what follows is Monday's market, reaching you a day later than it should have. Every Monday we read the hiring boards across the companies our community actually works for, and we count what is open at director level and above. This is the fourth Monday, which means we can finally look at what has moved across the month rather than just what is open on the day. One number has not moved at all. On the twenty fourth of August, eight vendor and media technology companies were carrying a senior opening. On the thirty first, eight. On the seventh of September, eight. On Monday, eight. Four Mondays, and that number has not shifted by one. What has shifted is how much we can see. Over the last three weeks the number of vendor boards we could actually get into went from twenty three to thirty four to thirty six, so we are looking at half as many companies again as we were a fortnight ago, and still finding exactly eight of them hiring at the top. This week itself: 103 companies swept, seventy boards opened, thirty six of those carrying nothing that qualified, and the other thirty four holding 213 senior seats between them.

What the market is telling us

What we think is actually happening

The vendor layer is not shrinking. It is holding very still.

Eight companies hiring leaders, four Mondays in a row, out of a pool that keeps getting bigger. Look inside the boards and the picture sharpens further. Titan OS has sixteen live roles open right now, six of them senior engineers, and the ceiling on every single one is Lead or Manager. Mux is carrying two postings. Irdeto's whole board is two internships. These are not dormant companies, they are companies hiring plenty of people and nobody to run anything. If you are vendor side and senior, that is worth sitting with. The work is there. The rung above it is not being cut, but it is not being added to either, and it has not been for a month.

Sixteen senior seats have now been open for the entire month

Same company, same title, every Monday since the twenty fourth of August. Roku has four of them. Netflix has three, including Director of Cloud Gaming Infrastructure and an Engineering Director in Warsaw. Deltatre has three, including the Technical Director for OTT delivery, which on Monday was open in five countries at once. The rest sit at Amazon, Brightcove, Comscore, Sportradar, Tubi and iSpot.tv. A month is a long time for a director level seat to stay open, and it usually means one of three things: the brief is harder than the company thought, the budget is less certain than the posting suggests, or nobody internally has decided what the role actually is. Worth knowing before you spend an afternoon on an application.

This market is far narrower than the headline count makes it look

Across the four Mondays we have counted a little over six hundred senior seats, which sounds like a wide open industry. It is not. In no week has less than a third of everything we found come from just five companies, and in two of the four weeks it was more than half. This week Paramount, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Nielsen and Crunchyroll account for ninety one of the 213 between them. And the same seventeen companies have produced a senior opening in every edition we have run. Amazon, Bitmovin, Brightcove, Comscore, Crunchyroll, Deltatre, Disney, Genius Sports, ITV, Innovid, Netflix, Nielsen, Paramount, Roku, Sportradar, Tubi and iSpot.tv. If you are building a target list rather than waiting for a posting, that list is a better starting point than anything else on this page.

The geography has not shifted, and it is the number we keep hoping will

Of the six hundred odd senior seats we have found in four weeks, four hundred and fifty one are in North America. Four were in the Middle East. Two were in Africa. Six, in a month, across two regions where a great many of you live and work. We can now say that with more confidence than we could a fortnight ago, because on Monday we got into OSN, STARZPLAY, MBC, e& and stc directly and read them at source rather than guessing. Between those five there are nineteen live postings of any kind and not one senior media role. But five companies are not a region, and most of you know better than we do that senior hiring in the Gulf rarely starts on a public board. What we can measure and what is actually happening are not the same thing here, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend the number is the whole story.

The data

What the 213 seats look like

Where the senior seats are

Where the senior seats are

213 director level and above roles, read off 70 public boards this morning. Across four Mondays we have found 604 senior seats. North America has taken 451 of them. The Middle East has taken four and Africa two. That gap has not narrowed in a month.

Which boards are actually hiring

Which boards are actually hiring

Share of boards carrying a senior opening, with the number read behind each. Every ad tech board we opened is hiring at the top, though that is seven boards. Fewer than one vendor board in four is, and that is thirty six. The vendor gap has held for four Mondays.

What they are hiring for

What they are hiring for

The 213 senior seats by function. Product and engineering leads on 69 seats, with commercial on 57. The two have traded places across the month, which is a reminder that one week of job boards is not a trend.

The vendor eight

The vendor eight

Vendor boards we could read, against vendor boards hiring at the top. The red bar has not moved in four Mondays. The grey one is simply how much of the vendor layer we could see that week. Three of the eight, Bitmovin, Brightcove and Deltatre, have been there every time.

The rest of the board

Every live senior seat this Monday

Thirty four of the roles below, all of them at NBCUniversal and Versant, carry a link to the company's board rather than to the posting itself, because neither board gives its postings an address of their own. You will need to search the title once you arrive. And if a company you follow is missing below, the likeliest reading is that we could not confirm its openings this week rather than that it has none. Twenty five boards would not open for us on Monday, among them Sky, the BBC, Warner Bros. Discovery, MediaKind and Magnite. Eight more of the companies we sweep publish no board at all.

One thing to be clear about

None of these are ours. Not one of the 213 is a role RedHolt has been asked to fill, there is no arrangement sitting behind any of it, and nothing on this page earns us a penny however it turns out. It is the open market, read off public boards on a Monday morning and handed over because it is more useful in your hands than in ours. If one of them is close to you, go at it yourself and go at it directly, and we will be quietly pleased if it lands.

What we are trying to build is a narrower thing than it might sound. We intend to be the most distinguished headhunting firm in the world for senior media roles, on both sides of this industry: the businesses that face the audience, and the businesses that build what those ones run on. Distinguished, not large. That is the bar we hold ourselves to, and sitting down to read these boards every Monday whether or not there is anything in it for us is part of how we hold it.

Four weeks in, the thing we did not expect is how much more the month tells you than the morning does. One Monday gives you a list. Four Mondays give you the eight vendor boards that have not become nine, the sixteen seats nobody has filled, and the six senior roles that opened across the Middle East and Africa in a month. We will keep stacking them up, because the picture only gets more useful from here.

If one of these roles is nearly you and you would like an honest read on it before you move, ask here and you will get one, whether or not it goes anywhere for either of us. And if you know of a senior role that belongs on this list and is not on it, put it in the comments, or send it to us privately if you would rather it did not sit under your name, and it goes in without us saying where it came from.

This list is always better built by all of us than read off boards by one of us.

Being part of a community is better than operating alone
